Introduction:

A stable and high growth in agriculture sector is essential for uplifting the standard of living of rural population. It is well agreed factor that there is an increased need for a second green revolution and also there is a need for farmers to diversify towards production of protein-rich food products such as milk, meat, egg, etc. Livestock sector, as an integral part of agriculture and rural economy, is one of the potential and regular income-generating sources to the rural and semi-urban community. Among livestock, Small Ruminants plays a major role in the enhancement of rural economy mainly of poor and backward communities. The nutritional security provided by livestock rearing is enormous. 

Scope for Sheep sector in Telangana:

> The net output from the unit of investment on Sheep sector is comparatively high in livestock farming even under adverse seasonal conditions like severe droughts. 

> As per the Socio-economic outlook of the state, this sector provides direct livelihood opportunities to about 29 lakh families in the state.

> Around 7 to 8 lakh families are engaged in Small Ruminants rearing activities in the State both in rural and urban areas.

> The state of Telangana is blessed with rich livestock resources, especially cattle and sheep population accounting for 5.52% of country’s population.

> Sheep breeding and rearing has the potential to offer employment to the landless labour, small and marginal farmers, nomadic and semi nomadic people,   etc., with little investments and with a potential of generation of quick returns. 

> The products like skin, goat hair, various organs, intestines and almost all parts are value generating, if properly collected and used. 


Vision of TSSGDCFL:

To improve the economic standards of the Sheep rearers  through productivity enhancement, improved market access and value addition through organized societies and to supply wholesome and hygienic meat (mutton) to all the consumers.


Objectives:

> To bring all the sheep & goat breeders under one roof.

> Formation of the Primary Sheep Breeders Cooperative Societies (PSBCS) in all the villages, District Unions (District Sheep Breeders Cooperative Unions)at District level and Apex body at State level, so that all the sheep breeders gets membership in the societies.

> To enhance the income levels of the shepherd community/sheep breeders through organized societies.

> To restore the traditional, rural, caste based professional skills pertaining to sheep rearing.

> To ensure supply of clean and hygienic meat to the consumers of Telangana state through organized outlets.

> To bring entrepreneur skills among the members of the societies.
